WayStation: Animal Rescue and Relocation

The St. Hubert’s WayStation program has emerged as the best-in-class animal relocation program in the nation. Through both flight and vehicle transport, the WayStation moves animals from ”source” partners, located in areas where the number of homeless dogs far exceeds the available homes, to “destination” partners in areas with more adoption opportunities.

Since its inception in August 2016, the St. Hubert’s WayStation transport program has built a network of more than 90 organizations that work together to save homeless animals’ lives and invest in source communities. The program has relocated over 20,000 animals from areas throughout the country.

What’s more, destination partners return a portion of the adoption fee for every relocated dog back to the source shelter. These funds are designated for programs and services that help reduce the number of homeless puppies entering their shelters. More than $450,000 from St. Hubert’s and WayStation destination partners has been invested in spay/neuter in source shelter communities, with the goal of addressing the root cause of overpopulation in their regions. Additionally, more than $280,000 has been provided to shelter partners to cover medical preparation costs such as vaccinations, testing and preventative medications.

TRANSPORT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH

  • The WayStation Program provides scholarships for personnel from source partners to attend HSUS Animal Care Expo, the country’s largest conference for animal welfare professionals.

  • In the past, St. Hubert’s hosted an in-person, hands-on Maddie’s Fund apprenticeship. 38 animal welfare professionals representing 35 organizations throughout the country attended to learn how to increase lifesaving by replicating our successful model in their own areas. Now, a WayStation Program online course is live on Maddie University!

  • St. Hubert’s staff members offer onsite training and enrichment toolkits to source partners at no cost.

  • St. Hubert’s and WayStation destination partners share resources with source partners whenever possible. Animal housing and sheltering equipment, food, toys, and other valuable items are sent on transport regularly.
