Critter Camps

Critter Camp is a hands-on educational experience designed to spark curiosity, build compassion, and inspire a lifelong respect for animals. Through age-appropriate lessons and interactive activities, campers learn what it means to care for animals responsibly while developing empathy, confidence, and kindness that extends far beyond the camp setting.

Critter Camp offers a guided learning environment where children explore animal welfare, advocacy, and the needs of different species in a safe, supportive way. Campers gain a deeper understanding of how humans can positively impact the lives of animals—and why humane treatment matters.

Each session features engaging guest speakers, both in person and virtual, who introduce campers to fascinating topics and special animal visitors. Camp days may also include nature walks around the property, animal-themed games, outdoor lunch time, creative enrichment projects for animals, and other hands-on activities designed to make learning memorable and fun.

Critter Camp is perfect for young animal lovers who are eager to learn, explore, and grow—while making meaningful connections with animals and the world around them.

Animal Science Week

Animal Science Week is a week-long educational program designed for incoming 9th graders who are passionate about animals and want to learn more about the science of animal care. Participants will explore animal behavior, learn how humane treatment supports animal welfare, and develop skills in responsible pet and domestic animal care. The program also introduces students to the basics of wildlife conservation, helping participants see how animals, humans, and the environment are connected. Through hands-on activities, interactive lessons, group discussions, and presentations by animal care professionals, students will build essential knowledge and gain a deeper appreciation for animals as they begin their high school journey.

Programs are held at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center’s Madison campus located at 575 Woodland Avenue, 9:00am-1:00pm daily. *Please note that peanut butter is used in our shelter.

Critter Camp FAQ

  • For the safety and respect of animal participants, animal meet and greet time is limited and closely monitored. Campers will have multiple opportunities to interact with various animals. This is primarily an educational program. While campers will get to interact with animals, they will not spend most of their time caring for or playing with animals.

  • Each day varies depending on which animals and guest presenters will be visiting camp. Typical activities include animal themed games, enrichment crafts, and guest presenters. Pending weather, campers will spend time outdoors.

  • St. Hubert’s is seeking high school students, ages 15+, to join our team as volunteer counselors. Qualifications include prior experience working with kids and an enthusiastic, outgoing personality!  Duties include supervising and engaging campers during educational presentations, leading games, assisting with crafts, set up & clean up duties before & after camp each day, and ensuring a fun camp experience! This is not an animal handling task. Apply

  • To run our camps efficiently, we repeat activities for each grade level from week to week. In addition, many of our camps fill up, and we'd like to reach as many children as possible. For these reasons, we limit each child to attending once each summer.

  • For summer camp, please register your child for the grade they will be entering in the fall. Camp activities are tailored to grade levels. Making exceptions to our grade level groupings poses challenges for campers and staff. To maintain the best camp experience for everyone, we do not make exceptions to the camp grade levels.

  • Groups are shuffled regularly to encourage interaction with new kids throughout the week. Campers who attend with friends will have plenty of opportunities to be together, but we cannot guarantee they will participate in every activity together.

  • A full refund minus a $25 processing fee will be issued provided the cancellation is given in writing 7 days prior to the start of the camp session. No refunds will be given for late arrivals, early departures or absences.
