Competitive Dog Sports at
St. Hubert's Dog Training School

Competitive Obedience:

Take your training to the next level and learn an advanced, motivational method that prepares you and your dog to join the ranks of those who enjoy competing to earn obedience titles.  Develop a closer relationship and become a focused working team, learning advanced techniques, skills and exercises.  You can work toward earning titles at the Novice, Open and Utility levels.  Purebred an mixed breed dogs alike love it!  Classes are held indoors at the school year-round.

Agility:

Agility is an exciting sport where a dog and handler work together to negotiate obstacles on a timed course.  Agility helps to enhance the working relationship, build confidence and maintain good physical condition for both dog and owner.  We provide year-round classes and seminars for all levels to meet the needs of both the pet owner and the serious-minded competitor.  Classes meet indoors or outdoors depending on the season.

Interested?  We hope so!
Here's how to tell whether you're ready for one of these programs.....

Determine if you are a "rookie" or a "pro":

A "rookie" might be described this way:  This is the first dog you have owned as an adult, or you have never taken a dog training course before.  You need assistance to learn how to train this dog to become a well-mannered pet.  This dog has behavior issues that need to be resolved.  This dog needs off leach training.
If you are a "rookie" you will need to take the pet training courses St. Hubert's offers through successful graduation of Super Advanced.  Then you can begin Competitive Obedience or Agility training.

A "pro" might be described this way:  You have owned and trained dogs before as an adult, and you have attended dog training courses before.  You do not need assistance to learn how to train this dog to be a well-mannered pet.  This dog does not have any behavior issues that need to be resolved.  This dog is reasonably reliable off-leash.
If you are a "pro" you can take pet training courses if you choose to, but they are not required.  You can begin Competitive Obedience or Agility training at any time provided you have met the prerequisite skills required for the program, as listed here.

Prerequisite skills for Competitive Obedience:

  • Your dog is at least 8 months old.

  • Your dog will reliably sit and stay, and down and stay, with difficult distractions present.

Prerequisite skills for Agility:
With distractions present, your dog must possess the following skills:

  • Reliable sit and stay

  • Reliable down and stay

  • A solid recall with strong distractions

  • Give you full attention when asked for it

  • Total ability to be controlled with only a flat buckle collar

We hope you'll join us for further training in one or both of these wonderful programs!  For more information, please call our office at 973-377-0116 and ask for detailed information on the program in which you are interested.
