FLEA & TICK PREVENTION - DOGS

Dear Dr. Woof:

Like most Golden Retrievers I enjoy romping in the fields and forest near my home with my owners. However, it seems I always bring home fleas. I have a nice new flea collar and my owner faithfully gives me baths with a flea shampoo, but as soon as I go out again, those annoying pests are back. Help!

Bugsy

Dear Bugsy:

A good flea and tick dip should solve your problem. You see, while your flea collar will kill the fleas in the area of your head and shoulders and shampooing will kill the fleas on your body, you are reinfested once you go out for a run again. Your veterinarian can supply a good dip that can easily be applied using an empty dishwashing liquid container. The dip should be allowed to dry on you and its residual effect will repel fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to three weeks. Remember, in addition to insuring your comfort, it is important to be protected from tapeworm, heartworm and lyme disease which can be transmitted to you by fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks respectively
