HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

Dear Readers:

Please keep your pets in mind when making holiday preparations, especially if this will be the animal's first holiday with your family and remember the following:

  • The sudden appearance of a tree inside the house can be a problem for your male dog and an invitation to climbing for your cat.
  • Low hanging ornaments may look like great playthings to your pets but the consequences can be severe if they are ingested.
  • Be sure to cover the open area of your tree stand so that pets cannot drink the water, especially if you add any type of tree preservative to it.
  • Place your holiday plants out of reach of pets, especially cats.
  • Resist the temptation to share your holiday treats with your pets and make sure your guest know that such goodies are liable to upset your pet's digestive system. Chocolate can be very dangerous to animals.
  • Be aware that a joyful houseful of friends and relatives can be stressful for animals who are not used to such gatherings and be sure your pets have a quiet, familiar area in which to relax during the festivities.
  • A little extra thought when preparing for the holidays will ensure a happy and healthy season for your animal companions.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Woof
