CATS, CARS, COLD WEATHER - CAUTION!

Dear Ms. Meow:

Please help me. My owner has begun acting strangely. Lately, whenever she gets into the car she blows the horn three times and then waits a few minutes to start the engine. Those beeps scare me right off the windowsill where I like to perch! What is wrong with her?

Blasted

Dear Blasted:

Don't worry--there is nothing wrong with your owner. She is simply watching out for neighborhood cats who may be out of doors. You see, when the air turns chilly, many cats take a break from the wind and weather by scooting underneath parked cars and climbing up in the engine compartments. Each winter St. Hubert's receives numerous calls to rescue cats who have been severely or fatally injured when the cars in which they are hiding are started. your kind owner is aware of that danger--her horn honking before starting up startle any such cat and allow it to escape to safety before the car is started.
